Process
The first step of my design process is to write down and create a mind map of thoughts and ideas for possible inspiration and motifs for the project.
After deciding on the direction of my design, I begin sketching and drawing motif and layout ideas. During this stage, I also take notes and consider printing methods. As I progress in the design, I ask for critique and take notes on ways to improve and enhance my design.
Opulence In Feathers
Although I typically start designing by drawing out patterns, depending on how rigid I want the design to be, I sometimes begin by working out design elements on the computer. For this particular design, I was inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau air vents. I started by digitally drawing the motif to create symmetrical elements easily. Although I designed the motif entirely digitally, the rest of my design process remained the same. I often take critique notes as I progress, reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the design and noting when certain elements might work in other projects.
With this project, I found that the design felt disconnected and relied too heavily on a literal interpretation of the color scheme and design elements of Art Deco and Art Nouveau. As a result, it felt dated. After evaluating the design, I refined the argyle pattern's floral motif. Playing with color and positive and negative space.
